Eco Red Shield™ Protected Lumber is eco-friendly and safe to use. It contains no formaldehyde or hazardous chemicals. We feel that this protected lumber can significantly reduce the demand for timber because structures built with it will last longer and won't require the same amount of maintenance or repair due to mold and termite damage. Eco Red Shield™ Protected Lumber is protected against mold, thus providing a healthier environment for people who live there - it emits no odors while being protected in the most innovative way. Eco Red Shield has been tested fours years in a row for Volitile Organic Compound (VOC) off gassing with virtually all testing measurements Below Quantifiable Levels (BQL) for chemical emissions. In an additional study, it was found [via third party testing conducted by Air Quality Sciences, Inc. in accordance with ASTM D5116 protocols] to significantly reduce the natural formaldehyde emissions from raw framing lumber, meeting California 01350, for indoor air quality specifications.

The Challenges
The lumber we use today is different than just 25-30 years ago. Today's lumber is juvenile or new-growth lumber and is more susceptible to the natural enemies of wood such as water, mold, fire and insects. This is because this juvenile lumber is more porous and essentially acts like a sponge - absorbing moisture and then subsequently producing mold and/or wood rot - which then in turn attract termites.  It's a natural, destructive and unhealthy cycle that attacks untreated lumber and is responsible for potentially billions of dollars in damage and home repair. Logs are frequently stored underwater - sometimes for more than a year, so even though your lumber looks fine during construction there are no guarantees what microorganisms are in your walls once you seal it shut with drywall. This lumber has been acceptable to contractors and even building officials for years because the removal of it has never been written into any code. At Eco Building Products we are establishing a new industry standard for building with lumber as demonstrated by our indoor air quality certifications.


Termites are a destructive urban pest, but new studies suggest the problem will get even worse with the expanding population density of our cities. Last year in California alone, termites consumed a billion board feet of lumber - that’s enough lumber to build a wall 1' wide x 17 ' high wall starting from the Oregon border all the way to the Mexican border.


Laboratory mold testing utilizing ASTM D5590 criteria. The top row indicates wood substrates with no biocides added to the coating. The left side specimens represent normal moisture content wood or dry conditions. The right side specimens represent high moisture content and extreme wetting conditions. The specimens were put into an environmental chamber for four weeks at 30 degrees C and greater than 90% humidity.  You can notice the top specimens grew mold on the cured film surface and the bottom specimens created a “Zone of Inhibition” around the specimen.
